Great Migration(Migration)

The Great Migration is the annual circular movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles and a major driver of East African safari tourism.

The Migration follows a roughly predictable pattern through the year: calving in the southern Serengeti (January-March), moving northwest through the central Serengeti (April-June), crossing the Grumeti and Mara rivers (July-October), and returning south (November-December). However, exact timing varies with rainfall.

For safari operators, the Migration heavily influences itinerary design, lodge selection, and pricing. Clients booking migration-focused trips need to be in the right part of the ecosystem at the right time. Operators must stay current on herd movements and adjust recommendations accordingly.
